Bryan at Career Startup School gave me an effective framework to view career growth as a result of experiences and skill development instead of just a collection of job titles. Different careers require different plans to become successful, and Bryan has encouraged me to think more strategically when evaluating what it takes to achieve my professional goals.
After some conversations with Bryan, I’ve had more direction in what career path to take and ways to achieve that as a college freshman. I met Bryan at a Startup networking event and he has put in tremendous amount of research into bringing Career Startup School to life. Though I was a working professional, I’ve talked to Bryan to get career feedback on how to steer my career and he had valuable feedback (ex: getting a career coach). If I had guidance like this earlier on, I would have likely chosen a path that was a better fit for me.
In our conversations, I felt empowered to think about my career path in terms of what I want, now and in the long term. When I was asked what I thought I needed to be doing right now, I said building out my coding project portfolio. However, I was challenged to reconsider if that was really what was needed given my goals — turns out, informational interviews, connections, and responding on LinkedIn were what I needed to do to land a job for now and start building out my future research ideas!
My conversations with Bryan have been fantastic. He has been a wonderful mentor, and was so enthusiastic whenever we talked. His unique background experience, especially his double major in Finance and Economics from Villanova University, as well as his CFA certification all came into play when we talked about my career. Lastly, he's incredibly passionate and driven about what he does, which is his wanting to make an impact on the lives of students before they step into 'real world' of college and careers.
Bryan and I connected to review different career paths within investment management. Since I was as a Financial Advisor and did not know which direction I wanted to go down going forward, he was able to help narrow down options to measure my current strengths/weaknesses and where they could take me. Shortly after connecting with him I was able to leverage my connections and secure a new position with our Private Bank division where I am now working in investment management. Our conversations seemed to really help impress recruiters and coworkers to make the transition as seamless as possible!
